Those who don't want to switch to permanent bedding shouldn't worry: we've found a system to improve the environment where your horse lives, working with bedding that needs weekly changes and straw bedding as well.
Even so, based on our experience, we want to clarify that:
- with traditional bedding, during normal stall cleaning about 30% to 40% of still clean material is thrown away.
- bedding, besides absorbing liquids, supports the horse's weight and therefore must be soft; traditional bedding doesn't work well because it's thin and often the horse pushes it aside, ending up resting on hard flooring and developing capped hocks or sores.
- urine in traditional bedding produces ammonia fumes that irritate the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, predisposing it to disease and reducing athletic performance; even with strong disinfectants the same irritant effect is achieved.
