Containing or driving away cervids is a reality with electric fences.

The system depends on the presence and size of the antlers. Some tips for anti-intrusion fencing for cervids:

  • The fence is at 2 or 3 heights with 40mm Shockproof Security tape Ref. B4 to be differentiated according to the animals present: the highest tape is used to allow the best visibility.
  • Small fawns and small fallow deer: two or three tapes using Ref. 12/3 posts. Distance from the ground of the first tape 35cm and distance from the ground of the last tape 70cm/1m.
  • Medium-sized animals (like chamois and fallow deer): two 40mm tapes. Distance from the ground of the first tape 40cm and distance from the ground of the second tape 90cm.
  • Large animals with antlers: 40mm tape Ref. B4. Distance from the ground of the first tape 60/70cm and distance from the ground of the second tape 120/130cm. Very often, 2m posts Ref. 7C are used with three tapes.

Suggested components:

  • Fiberglass posts Ref. 7A for straight sides (first mount the insulators Ref. 8N on the posts and then drive the posts into the ground with a mallet, preferably a plastic one).
  • Corner insulators Ref. 45V to be mounted on wooden posts with a minimum section of 10cm x 10cm.
  • Contact holder tensioners Ref. 44V to be used at the beginning and end of the tape and on the sides of the gates created with handle Ref. 11A, always to be mounted on wooden posts with a minimum section of 10cm x 10cm.

Tricks gained from experience: below are some small suggestions to ensure that the desired effect is achieved with our equipment.

Deer with large antlers

We recommend this application by fixing the post, whether wooden (Ref. 47P) or fiberglass, not vertically but inclined by about 45° towards the outside of the fence. This allows the animal to first confront the low tape and then the high one with its antlers. Even if it is not exactly cheap, multiple levels of tape are also recommended.

The posts can be placed every 5 meters in non-windy areas. For hornless cervids, the fence can also be kept vertical and not inclined. White color is preferred!

With all wild animals, but even more so with cervids, we need to place the fences in a highly visible way. In fact, these animals move at high speeds, so the fences must be positioned away from brushwood and places that might hide them.

On some occasions, we recommend creating a corridor precisely to have two lines of defense, and thus better safeguard what we need to protect.
